The Velddrif area includes Laaiplek, Noordhoek, Port Owen and Dwarskersbos. The slow-flowing Berg River snakes through the area and reflects the tranquility of this town which lies 140km from Cape Town. It is a birder’s mecca, the meeting place of waders and fishermen, bokkoms and beaches – and you drive straight into it with the R27 from Cape Town. Accommodation is available in town, on farms, at the sea or on the river. There is plenty to do in the midst of tranquility: Pick from bird-watching, yachting and kayaking; see flowers and whales in season; and visit art galleries, craft shops, coffee shops and tea gardens – even a health shop. The annual Berg River Canoe Marathon ends here, and the town also hosts a bi-annual Crafts Exhibition in August. Velddrif Tourism Bureau has all the information you need. Also worth a visit is Piketberg, among other towns in the area:
Piketberg: This town, in “the valley of fruit, wheat and wine”, lies 125km north of Cape Town on the N7 route and is situated at the foot of the Piketberg Mountains. It is an area of vast contrast and unexpected beauty which comprises rugged mountains and sheltered, bountiful valleys. Surrounded by rolling wheat fields, vineyards, and fruit-growing farms, it is still rich in fynbos and boasts wonderful wines. Driving up the mountain to Piket-Boberg offers a breathtaking view of the region’s large and intensive deciduous fruit- and grain-growing farms. The tarred road is bordered by avenues of tall pine trees and beautiful farms where proteas and fruit for export are cultivated and ends at a gem of a tea garden way into the mountains. Piketberg Tourism Bureau has all the information you need regarding accommodation, wine cellars, arts and crafts and other attractions.
