Carnival time!

Velddrif is getting ready to hold a winter Winter Carnival to coincide with the 50th Berg River Marathon which is being held in July this year.

The historical occasion of the marathon is an excellent occasion to start making a new history - that of the Velddrif Winter carnival.

Mr. Leon Terblanche, chairman of the carnival committee, says the involvement of the community and businesses in Velddrif are the most important factors being kept in mind in planning the carnival. The committee has been meeting since last year. The complete business plan was tabled at its last meeting on February 8. (Further information on the matters considered at the meeting will follow.)

At this point, the following is being planned:

The carnival will be centred in six areas in the Velddrif area: Around the minicipal building in Voortrekker Road, the Laaiplek Hotel and SA Fisheries Museum in the Laaiplek Harbour area, the area from Noordhoek towards Dwarskersbos (Soverby Lapa included), Pelican Harbour area, the whole of Bokkom Avenue, and Port Own.

Each area will focus on its unique characteristics and arrange entertainment around that. Transport will be made available by taxi or boat between the diffrent areas or private transport can be used. An exciting part of the programme will be a float procession on the river on Saterday July 16, the last day of the Berg River Canoe Marathon. Sport events will be organised under auspices of  the Berg River Sport Trust.
